Whether you use play to stimulate creativity or learning, or as this brilliant site describes: as Pointless Games, I can't imagine any situation where having a good knowledge of these games wouldn't be helpful. 

If your point is to help people reconnect - break down some formal social barriers - then game playing is a wonderful thing to do... It seems we *really* need new and interesting ways of connecting ....

Dancing the Commute!

Introducing the latest commercial from T-Mobile, filmed at 11am on Thursday 15th January 2009 at Liverpool Street station, London. Although (to us savvy users of Web 2.0) flashmobs may not be a new concept, when I saw the smile on my fathers face as he saw this ad on friday, I realised how such a simple act of community collaboration (and dance!!) can add a little bit of happiness to the daily routine of the commuter. Wonderful - I love how the elderly lady joins in at the end too!

I just discovered my favourite blog!
Geek Dads is a blog by Chris Anderson (Long Tail, Editor in Chief of Wired). It includes posts on making Wall - E out of lego, actresses from geeky movies, and lots and lots of stuff about playing stuff with your kids.

How to Turn the City into a Playground for Grown-ups (and others, too!)

Bruno Taylor has a few good ideas about reclaiming public space for play.  He writes:

71% of adults used to play on the streets when they were young. 21% of children do so now. Are we designing children and play out of the public realm?

Play equipment, as we commonly think of it, dictates the user - playgrounds full of bright colors and thick plastic are for children, not adults, and this unspoken rule is a maxim we adults don't frequently break.  But should public space - the places where we all gather, and where so much social interaction happens - be devoid of play?  Bruno thought not, and took direct action.

He has just completed a Masters in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martin, and has designed both the swing set above, and a rocking bench for the reclamation of public space for play.  You can find more pictures and details at Pixelsumo.

Can... Do?

We do because we can? Two projects that while bonkers, also seem rather charming.

Above is Knitta. They knit jumpers for poles... or in their own words . . . "bombing the inner city with vibrant, stitched works of art, wrapped around everything from beer bottles on easy nights to public monuments and utility poles on more ambitious outings."

Below is Telamegaphone. Telemegaphone Dale stands seven metres tall on top of the Bergskletten mountain overlooking the idyllic Dalsfjord in Western Norway. When you dial the Telemegaphone’s phone number the sound of your voice is projected out across the fjord, the valley and the village of Dale below.

Ok, so what do you call someone who finds herself taking photo's of cool cereal boxes (because they are green and fun) in Waitrose, with her iphone . . . . so that she can blog about them. 21st Century Woman? Nuts?

BTW - One box is about turning the box into your own puppets, the other about transporting an egg at least 3 metres.. as least!

Continuous Picnic

As part of the London Festival of Architecture, Bohn & Viljoen Architects and their team of architects, community gardeners, designers and food enthusiasts explore this question in a day-long event ... The Continuous Picnic on the 8th July.
For one day, a designated area in one of the most beautiful parts of central London will transform into a continuous picnic of infinite personal encounters and fresh food events. Located on Montague Place (closed for traffic on that day) and Russell Square, this is a free outdoor event for everybody to celebrate good food and company.

1. I love gnomes.

2. I did synchronised swimming for a whole term . . . and really enjoyed it!

3. I kill house plants.

5. I am very easily amused. . . Not always that helpful, but it keeps the poor dear happy.
