Wow! Great analysis. Couple of observations. Engagement with others in pursuing a cause should only be encouraged when the individual has been through a process to assure themselves that this is their priority - the place, people and cause to invest their energies. Too many folk join a cause to feel like they belong, rather than because they belong. The cause becomes a diversion from what might really matter.

This requires a lot of work in both understanding self and the nature of progress.

Do not join a cause until you can be an asset rather than a liability. This means bringing power, expertise and resources to the cause. Warm bodies are not (always) enough.

Collaboration with govt should be seen as close to a last resort until democracy is significantly reformed. Govt is shaped much more by lobbyists than by electorates and any collaboration with citizens is likely to be distorted as a result.

The modus operandii of Govt sometimes feels designed to kill community movements with meetings, agendas, budgeting requirements and business plans. This is not how citizens and communities prefer to work.

There is much work to be done to develop employees of the state to enable them to work effectively with individuals, groups and communities in ways that support them. This is some of the ground we will be covering in Bottom Up is the New Black - http://localenterprise.wordpress.com/2011/11/02/bottom-up-is-the-new-black/

Finally we should always think twice before we put the future of our movement in the hands of a bureaucrat. Never become dependent on them for money or resources. Never give them the power to shut you down.

I guess it is any implicit assumption that 'creative collaboration with govt' is the way forward that needs careful inspection.

Many thanks for publishing such a great piece of work.
